What Does Each Statistic Mean?

Word Count

The total number of words in your text. Words are separated by spaces. A word counter is essential for blog posts (typically 1,500–2,500 words for SEO), essays (500–1,000 words), and social media captions.

Character Count

The total number of characters including spaces. Character count matters for meta titles (under 60 characters), meta descriptions (under 160 characters), and social media posts.

Characters Without Spaces

Total characters excluding all spaces. Useful for SMS (160 characters), Twitter bio (160 characters), and calculating actual text density.

Sentences

The number of complete sentences detected by counting periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. Good writing typically has 15–20 words per sentence.

Reading Time

Estimated time to read your content based on the average reading speed of 200 words per minute. A 1,000-word article takes approximately 5 minutes to read.

Readability Score

Based on the Flesch-Kincaid formula, this score measures how easy your text is to read. A score of 60–70 is ideal for general web content. Higher scores mean easier reading.

Keyword Density

The percentage of times a specific word appears in your text. For SEO, aim for 1–3% keyword density for your target keyword. Above 3% is considered keyword stuffing.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is calculated by dividing the total word count by the average reading speed of 200 words per minute. For example, a 1,000-word article takes approximately 5 minutes to read.

What is keyword density and why does it matter?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a specific word appears in your text relative to the total word count. For SEO, the ideal keyword density is between 1% and 3%. Using a keyword more than 3% can be considered keyword stuffing by search engines and may hurt your rankings.

How does the readability score work?

The readability score is based on the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease formula. It measures average sentence length and average word length to determine how easy your text is to read. A score of 60–70 is ideal for general web content and blog posts.

Can I count words in languages other than English?

Yes, Calcon's Word Counter works with any language that uses spaces to separate words, including Hindi, Spanish, French, German, and more. The tool counts spaces to determine word boundaries.

What is the character limit for Twitter?

Twitter (now X) has a character limit of 280 characters per tweet for standard accounts. The Word Counter's Social Media panel shows your character count against Twitter's limit in real-time with a color-coded progress bar.

How many words should a blog post have for SEO?

For SEO purposes, blog posts should ideally be between 1,500 and 2,500 words. Longer content tends to rank better as it covers topics more comprehensively. However, quality matters more than quantity — always write for your reader first.

Does the word counter work offline?

The word counter works entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Once the page has loaded, it does not need an internet connection to count words. However, you need a connection to initially load the page.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces includes every character including blank spaces between words. Characters without spaces counts only actual letters, numbers, and punctuation — excluding all spaces. This matters for SMS limits (160 characters) which count spaces.

How accurate is this word counter?

Calcon's Word Counter uses standard JavaScript string methods to count words by splitting on whitespace, sentences by detecting punctuation marks, and paragraphs by detecting blank lines. It is as accurate as professional word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
