Understanding Discounts

Flat Discount vs Percentage Discount

A flat discount gives a fixed rupee amount off (e.g., ₹200 off). A percentage discount gives a proportion of the price off (e.g., 20% off). For high-value items, a percentage discount saves more; for low-value items, a flat discount can be better.

MRP and Effective Discount

In India, discounts are typically calculated on the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The percentage shown on product labels compares the sale price to MRP — so always compare the actual selling price, not just the discount %.

Stacked Discounts

Two sequential discounts of 20% and 10% are NOT equivalent to 30% off. Applying 20% then 10% on ₹1,000 gives ₹720, while a single 30% discount gives ₹700. Always calculate each discount step by step using this calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the discounted price?

Discounted Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount% / 100). Example: ₹1,000 with 20% off = ₹1,000 × 0.80 = ₹800.

How do I find what discount % was applied?

Discount % = ((Original Price - Final Price) / Original Price) × 100. Example: Original ₹1,000, Final ₹800 → Discount = 20%.

What is the difference between discount amount and discount %?

Discount Amount is the rupee value saved (e.g., ₹200). Discount % is how much that represents relative to the original price (e.g., 20%). Both describe the same saving in different units.

Are stacked discounts the same as a combined discount?

No. Two sequential discounts (e.g., 20% + 10%) are not the same as 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, giving a smaller total saving than a combined discount of equal sum.
